Return of Zone Race at Beaver Valley Ski Club

BEAVER VALLEY – On Sunday March 19^th patrollers from across Central Zone came together at Beaver Valley Ski Club for the first Zone Race event since the start of the pandemic.

Spirits were high as 9 teams took to the course. Throughout the morning individual time trials for alpine and snowboard disciplines took place, with the day culminating in the most anticipated event of the day – the toboggan challenge.

Racing our famed rescue CATX toboggans, teams of 4 had to negotiate a tough course. The first 2 patrollers – one in the handlebars, one on a tail rope – were responsible for slaloming between the gates and taking some tight turns at speed. The second 2 members of the team raced the clock to reach a designated halfway point at which they performed a lightening fast equipment hand-off with the goal of putting one team member into the toboggan as a “patient” and the other shuttling the equipment to the bottom of the hill. The final team score was based on the time of the last team member to cross the electronic eye.

Much fun, and chaos ensued as heavy snow conditions made for thick snow and reduced visibility.
