Wanna patrol again? Here’s your pre-season checklist to make sure you’re ready and qualified to patrol. It’s up to you to be ready.

For patrollers not yet registered to return to active patrol duty:

Register as a returning patroller so we know you’ll be back.

  • On the Personal screen in ZIMS select Courses>> Department: First Aid>>Program: Advanced First Aid Requalification – Returning Patroller>>Curriculum:2022 – 1 day requalification. Click “Enroll” to select your course.

For all returning patrollers:

Complete your 3-step pre-course prerequisites & attend an AFA Requalification. No excuses, no exceptions. “The dog ate my homework” won’t cut it!

Step One: Complete your AFA Skills (Yellow Card) evaluations. If you’re done – Congratulations!

  • If you’re not done, or not sure – check with your patrol leader or AFA Coordinator
  • If all else fails, there are three “last call” AFA Skills Completion courses available. No other courses will be scheduled. Space is limited, enroll today.
    • September 10th – Snow Valley
    • September 11th – Beaver Valley
    • September 11th – Central Zone Training Centre
      • To enroll in ZIMS: Personal Screen>>Courses>>Department: First Aid>>Program: Advanced First Aid Requalification – Returning Patroller>>Curriculum: AFA Skills Record Completion. Click on “Enroll” to select your course.

Step Two: Complete your e-learning. Check your access to e-learning now. If you wait to the last minute and can’t access it, you may miss out!

(Note: allow at least 2.5 hours)

  1. If you don’t have the e-learning website bookmarked, go to ZIMS Personal Screen>>e-learning 2022 Landing Page. Click on the @ symbol and you’ll be directed to the e-learning landing page.
  2. Log into the e-learning site and select the “eAFA_2022_Requalification” course. Use your CSP id and password.
  3. To complete each item, click on the topic title (blue text).

Step Three: Complete your on-line written exam. Check your access to e-Exam now. If you wait to the last minute and don’t have access, you may miss out! (Note: completion of a paper-based version should be arranged in advance)

Pro Tip: While the exam is open book it is highly recommended that patrollers prepare by reviewing their manual prior to attempting the exam. A Written Exam Review 2022 guide is available in the Student Downloads section of ZIMS. This can be accessed from the Main Menu screen (there’s a link on the Personal Screen to the Main Menu).

To access:

  • If you don’t have the e-exam website bookmarked, go to ZIMS Personal Screen>>e-Exam 2022 Landing Page. Click on the @ symbol and you’ll be directed to the e-learning landing page. Click on the link at the bottom of the page (you may need to scroll down to reveal the link.
  • Log into the e-exam site and select the “Advanced_first_aid_2022_exam”.

There are three sections to complete:

  1. The National exam instructions
  2. The exam itself (100 multiple choice questions); and
  3. The Completion Confirmation

NOTE: You have two hours to complete the exam. The passing grade is 80%. If you do not achieve a grade of 80% on your first attempt, you must wait at least 24 hours before attempting the exam. Patrollers only have two attempts to achieve a mark of 80%. Failure to achieve a passing mark of 80% after two attempts means the patroller must either take a leave of absence for a year or successfully complete the new patroller training course in full to patrol this season. It is strongly recommended that patrollers invest a substantial amount of time preparing for a second attempt.

2022 Update: The screen views on the exam site are different this year due to changes to the Moodle platform used to host the exam. You will not see your responses to each exam question or be asked to review the exam at this time.

  • To confirm your exam result (pass/fail):
    • If successful: you’ll see a prompt to complete the Completion Confirmation
    • If unsuccessful: you’ll see a red box with “Failed: Receive a grade”
      • To find your exam grade, go to the Main Menu screen (click on the “Advanced_first_aid_2022_exam” in the navigation path near the top of the screen). Then click on the “Advanced_first_aid_2022_exam” in bolded blue text in the Completion Confirmation section at the bottom of the screen.

Step Four: Attend a AFA Requalification Evaluation Course. Time to show up & shine!

Please honour your enrolment in the course by showing up. If your work or personal schedule is unpredictable, enroll in an early course to give yourself an alternative if you need to reschedule. We will not be scheduling any additional courses to accommodate no-shows or cancellations. If you miss your course, you risk sitting out the season.

2022 Update: You can requalify patient assessment using either the 2020-2021 version or the new 2022 version introduced this year in the eAFA 2022 Requalification e-learning course.

Evaluation Reminders:

  • Help us keep the classroom environment safe. Self-screen for COVID-19 and do not attend if you’re symptomatic or should be self-isolating
  • Arrive on time, and with the supplies needed for the day – a lunch, face mask, eye protection, a pen/pencil, a pocket face mask and kneeling pad for CPR, and anything else you need to successfully complete your patient assessment, diagnostic and BLS evaluations.
  • These courses are evaluation events – the objective is to evaluate your skills and abilities against CSP standards. It’s up to you to be ready to be evaluated. Patrollers are allowed two attempts at the diagnostic evaluation. Second attempts will be pre-scheduled and may require you to travel to an alternate location. Patrollers who do not pass on a second attempt have the option of a leave of absence or successfully completing the new patroller training course.

Pro Tip: The CSP national website has everything to need to prepare. Just sign-in as a member and click on My CSP Student Training Resources:

  1. Advanced First Aid Manual: the latest version can be found here. Focus on chapters four to seven – Patient Assessment, Oxygen, Basic life support, Automated external defibrillator (AED)
  2. Training Documents:
    • Patient Assessment Checklist – 2022 version
    • Written Exam Review 2022 – a study guide for this year’s exam
    • 2022 AFA Diagnostic Scenario Evaluations General Information – know what to expect during your diagnostic evaluation experience.
  3. Previous Exams:
    • 2021 AFA Written Exam and Answers – another great study guide to help prepare
    • 2021 CPR Written Exam and Answers – to help you prepare for the BLS requalification
    • 2021 Diagnostic Exams – Scenarios 1-5 – use these to familiarize yourself with some typical exam scenarios and to understand the marking system used by evaluators

Pro Tip: Practice some diagnostic scenarios with some patrol friends to get familiar with typical AFA scenarios and how the evaluations will be conducted. If you can comfortably work your way through the five scenarios from 2021 you’ll be in great shape to tackle this year’s scenarios.
